Lighting design is an integral part of bringing a home’s architecture to life, yet too often, it’s treated as an afterthought. In my decades of building custom homes, I’ve seen how thoughtfully planned lighting can reveal architectural beauty, create ambiance, and make spaces functional, no matter the time of day.
I believe in integrating lighting design from the very beginning. It starts with layering ambient, task, and accent lighting to craft a holistic environment. Ambient lighting provides general illumination; task lighting focuses on functionality for specific activities; and accent lighting highlights architectural features such as vaulted ceilings and elegant niches.
Using a combination of natural and artificial light allows each space to shift with the changing light throughout the day, maintaining a dynamic atmosphere. Different rooms require unique strategies – a kitchen needs bright task lighting, while a living room benefits from ambient warmth.
The right fixtures and the ability to dim lights enhance control over ambiance, transforming how spaces feel at any given moment. Ultimately, lighting design is as important as the architecture itself, bringing a home to life in ways good design alone cannot.
